Except for sleep, humans spend more of their lifetimes on work than on any other activity, and many have come to take for granted the standard 40h workweek in developed countries as a 'natural configuration of time'. In recent decades, however, prevailing conceptions of work are being destabilized, and degrowth proponents are advocating work time reduction as a measure to reduce environmental pressure, reduce unemployment, and enhance human well-being. Drawing on insight from history, anthropological research, and time-use studies, this talk aims at broadening the frames harnessing current debates about the future of work. First, we examine evolving conceptions of work in different cultures and review patterns of working time throughout history. Next, we present ideas and principles to rethink work and working time along ecological economic principles of sustainability and justice.

CBMR secures five-year funding extension from Novo Nordisk Foundation

The Novo Nordisk Foundation has awarded CBMR up to DKK 1 billion (€134.2 million) to support research toward innovative approaches to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of cardiometabolic diseases.

The prevalence of cardiometabolic diseases continues to increase globally. The number of people living with diabetes has quadrupled over the past forty years, while the rate of obesity has tripled over the same period. Today, more than one billion people live with cardiometabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

More effective approaches to diagnosing, preventing, and treating these diseases are needed to address this growing public health crisis.

To support this need, the Novo Nordisk Foundation is continuing its support for the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) at the University of Copenhagen, with a new grant of up to DKK 1 billion (€134.2 million).

“With this grant, the Novo Nordisk Foundation enables the Center to achieve an even deeper understanding of the underlying courses of cardiometabolic diseases. This is needed for us to develop better prevention and treatment options. Ultimately, we hope this knowledge will lead to development of solutions that are tailored to the individual – an approach we also refer to as precision health,” says Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, which has supported the Center since its establishment in 2010.

Goodbye to the “average” patient?

Over the coming years, the Center will continue and evolve its fundamental research into the biological mechanisms underpinning cardiometabolic diseases. Through its interdisciplinary and collaborative research culture, the Center’s scientists will also join forces and address challenging questions. One key research goal is to sort patients with cardiometabolic disease into subtypes and identify their distinct genetic and molecular markers.

“We now know that cardiometabolic diseases have many distinct patient groups. That means that there is no ‘average’ patient and no ‘one-size-fits-all’ treatment. However, we still have a lot to learn about the differences between patient subgroups, and how they are influenced by factors such as genetics, lifestyle and the environment,” says CBMR Executive Director Professor Juleen R. Zierath.

The Center will also increase its investments in innovation to drive the translation of its discoveries into transformative treatments and therapies and support the development of precision health globally. Since 2018, the Center scientists have submitted 10 patents and started 5 spin-out companies based on discoveries and innovations made at CBMR.

Educating the next generation

As an integrated part of the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, the Center’s impact is not limited to its scientific discoveries. The Center will continue to contribute to the education of under- and postgraduate students, whose impact is felt at the Center and beyond, whether in industry, academia or elsewhere.

“We are thrilled by the upcoming extension of the Center and look forward towards even more ground-breaking research in the field of basic metabolic research – for the potential benefit of patients across the globe,” says Bente Merete Stallknecht, Dean at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, while also highlighting CBMR’s role as a catalyst for talent development:

“The Center is home to worldclass scientists and provides a platform for the next generation of talented researchers at our university – something essential for the future of metabolic research in Denmark.”

The Center also collaborates closely with a range of partners in the Greater Copenhagen regional research ecosystem. They include clinical partners such as Rigshospitalet and Gentofte Hospital, as well as the pharma and biotech industry in the Danish-Swedish life science cluster Medicon Valley.

Over the coming years, the Center will further strengthen its research alliances with international academic partners, including with the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Genomic Mechanisms of Disease at the Broad Institute in Boston, USA. These alliances will support the Center in translating human genetic discoveries into cardiometabolic disease mechanisms and provide the Center with the knowledge, expertise and framework to launch a precision health cohort.

Body Clocks - An artist's re-imagining of the science of circadian rhythms

In the multi-work installation 'Body Clocks', artist Isabella Martin is inspired by chronobiological research into circadian rhythms. In collaboration with Kristin Hussey (Medical Museion/CBMR) and CBMR scientists, Martin has produced a series of four new art works that re-imagine the body clock through the artist’s lens.

This project is the result of over two years of collaboration between Martin, Hussey and the chronobiologists of CBMR. With Body Clocks, art is brought back into the scientific center that inspired it. Displayed in different locations throughout CBMR, the works aim to provoke and inspire scientists to ask new questions about their research. We hope that this installation will demonstrate the importance of not leaving science out of art-science.

About the artist:
Isabella Martin is a visual artist whose interdisciplinary practice is context specific, driven by collaboration with the sciences. Her ongoing research focuses on ideas of measurement, navigation and time in relation to place and the body, through work with an expanding group of collaborators. Recent projects include ‘WAVE MACHINES’, exhibited at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen, ‘Keeping Time’ For Sculpture in the City, London, and ‘The Burning’ screened at Crosscuts Film Festival, Stockholm. She was recently commissioned by CBMR to produce the film ‘Time Animals’ featured in the exhibition The World is in You (2021).

GENERATIONS – Metabolic science on display in the 'The World is in You'

Epigenetic inheritance is a complex scientific field and the focus of CBMR's Professor Romain Barrès research. Specifically, his team is interested how a person's diet can change the messages passed on by their sperm – and potentially make their offspring more or less at risk of chronic diseases.

This is just one of the many ways that humans are, potentially, shaped by the planet, making it a perfect fit for the Medical Museion's latest exhibition 'The World is in You'.

In this video, Professor Barrès and curator Malthe Kouassi Bjerregaard discuss their collaboration to communicate the incredible ways that people and planet are connected, using basic scientific research carried out at CBMR.

The Medical Museion is a museum of medical history and also, like CBMR, part of the University of Copenhagen. While they are home to a historic collection of medical objects and put on exhibitions, they also carry out research. Some of this research takes place within CBMR, under the research programme Metabolic Science in Culture.

This is a unique collaboration whose goal is situate metabolic science in cultural, historical, and philosophical context through humanities and science communication research, which in turn informs innovative public engagement practices.

TIME – Metabolic science on display in the 'The World is in You'

"We wanted to think about body time, inspired by the science of circadian rhythms, which thinks about how our bodies live in time, the cycles of time every day." 🌚🏃‍♀️🌞

Circadian biology is the science of the body clock, which are set to the timing of the 24-hour rotation of the earth. It's a field of research that interests our scientists at CBMR, in particular Associate Professor Zach Gerhart-Hines, whose team interested in how all the different cellular clocks within your body coordinate every behaviour or metabolic process in your body to maintain metabolic health.

When the curators of Medical Museion's latest exhibition, 'The World is in You', decided on Time as one of the four themes, they brought in Zach's research team to collaborate on a film. They commissioned artist Isabella Martin to explore the theme, and she ended followed scientists in the laboratories at CBMR who carry out experiments at all times of day and night to produce the work 'Time Animals'.

Medical Museion historian and Postdoc Kristin Hussey says: "what we were trying to do with this work is interrogate not necessarily what chronobiology is, but what it feels like to be one of the people who are doing it."

An introduction to the Metabolomics Platform at CBMR

The Metabolomics Platform established at CBMR in 2019 is led by Professor Thomas Moritz.

The Platform provides targeted and untargeted metabolomics analyses, as well as lipidomics analysis. We are currently also implementing stable isotope labelling techniques for flux determination.

We offer experimental and computational services, and assistance with project planning of metabolomics-based projects on a case-by-case basis, as they will be depending on the biological system and question. We find that in-house expertise and services help our scientists streamline their research, so they can achieve their research goals faster.

New research points toward better and longer lasting diabetes treatments

Scientists at the University of Copenhagen has deepened our understanding of the brain's role in diabetes.

The latest findings, which were published in Nature Communications, build on research by Professor Michael Schwartz from the University of Washington. Several years ago, he discovered that injecting a single dose of the protein FGF1 targets the brain and cures diabetes in mice.

Associate Professor Tune H. Pers from the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research teamed up with the Schwartz Lab to better understand how FGF1 affects the brains of mice.

They were able to find that particular neurons within the hypothalamus are changed in a sustained way and that this change is critical to induce long lasting diabetes remission. The research could pave the way for new diabetes treatments that are more effective and long lasting. It also challenges the prevailing wisdom and about the cause, and potential cure, for diabetes.

PhD student Torben Sølbeck Rasmussen works in a laboratory at the Department of Food Science at the University of Copenhagen (UCPH FOOD), which is called "Poop Lab". Here he makes a shit extract of viruses from thin mice, which he hopes can make thick mice thinner. If the treatment is successful and can later be transmitted to humans, it has a huge potential. Although we know that the gut microbiome has a large impact on a wide range of diseases, fecal transplantation from a healthy donor to a sick recipient is used to a limited extent today, as there may be some risks. The new approach removes some of the risk and the hope is that over time the method can be developed into a completely safe treatment.

In the history of the Food Science part 4 - We survived on the rye bread Professor of food chemistry Leif Skibsted is interviewing associate professor emerita Åse Hansen (both from UCPH FOOD) about the importance of bread for our nutrition and about the research in bread, sourdough, taste etc.

The rye came to Denmark at the end of the Iron Age, and the first clay ovens found for baking raised bread are from the Viking age. When people talked about bread, they always meant rye bread. The wheat bread was only eaten by the nobility and the rich, but today we know that the rye is far healthier for us, because we traditionally eat the whole kernel from the rye. We have traditionally milled the wheat to flour in such a way that 25% of the grain - and precisely that part with most nutrients - was sorted and used for animal feed. However, when eating whole wheat flour (also called graham flour), these nutrients are not lost. It is not about eating very coarse bread with lots of whole grains in it, but just about having to grind whole grains into flour instead of sorting out the coarser parts of the kernel, including the bran.

You also get an answer as to why the sourdough is so important to the taste of the bread, about the researcher Mikkel Hindhede, who during the First World War made experiments with his assistant Madsen to prove that a diet without much meat was preferable.

In episode 3 - The Secret of Your Modern Beer, Professor in Food Chemistry Leif Skibsted interviews Associate Professor Henrik Siegumfeldt about beer.

The quality of the beer in ancient times was very inconsistent. At first the beer was brewed by people in every small city and some were better at it than others. Everybody would be capable of brewing a good beer once in a while. The problem was to do it again. And if you did brew a good beer it would expire fast, so you could not distribute it to other cities. Then it was discovered that you could reuse the leftovers from a previous brew to start a new one and the yeast ring was developed. The Ester Boserup Prize for Research on Development 2019 was awarded to Ian Scoones, Professorial Fellow, Institute of Development Studies (IDS). Ian Scoones gave an open lecture titled 'Why embracing uncertainty means rethinking development'.

The Ester Boserup Thesis Prize 2019 was awarded to Eliezeri Sungusia for the PhD thesis 'Reproducing Forestry Education, Scientific Authority, and Management Practices in Tanzania', and will give a presentation of the theses.

The event took place at Festauditoriet, Bülowsvej 17, 1870 Fredeiksberg C on Friday 14 June 2019, 14:00-19:00.

In Denmark, the modern history of food science begins with the establishment of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University (RVAU) at Frederiksberg in 1858 – which today is a part of the University of Copenhagen. The RVAU employed researchers/teachers who, through research, dissemination and education, paved the way for a huge export adventure of butter and bacon at a time when Denmark was struggling to keep up the export of cereals.

One of the key researchers was Niels Johannes Fjord, the Niels Bohr of food science in Denmark. Fjord was extremely energetic and set up his own experimental institution, where he and colleagues from the RVAU developed brilliant solutions to problems that were crucial to Denmark’s economy and helped to create the foundation for the Danish welfare system. Fjord’s research became incredibly important when falling prices and high international competition in the grain market meant that Denmark had to majorly reorganise its agriculture. Butter and bacon became the new gold for the country’s export earnings. The question is whether today we are facing a similarly radical shift in food production?

The challenges of climate, human demand and the UN’s sustainability goals are forcing us to question our current food production. Perhaps we are on the threshold of a new revolution, having to come up with solutions to feed an increasing population in a sustainable way.

Professor of Food Chemistry Leif Skibsted is the host who shows us the past of Danish food science and draws threads right up to the present.
